Gilda
Installation
Paint and ready-mades
2007
This is the story of Gilda she is 114 years old. In her day she was quite a girl and liked to flirt with the dangerous side of life. She liked a good time and had delusions of grandeur. In 1904 as a young girl of 12 she escaped Russia and came to England.
By 16 Gilda was married by 21 separated and that’s when the real fun begun. With four children in tow she begun to lead the life of a good time girl and got into all sorts of mischief………
This work follows the stories of Gilda as she weaves her way through life and its twists and turns.
The idea that remembrance is warm and sentimental, in reality for some the past is often a dark mysterious place where events were harsh and lives endured absorbed in secrets frequently to atrocious to divulge.
From this background stories are told by the courageous who feel the need to exorcise the ghosts of the predecessors. These stories passed down like Chinese whispers, are kept as trophies by the contemporary generation, digested and retold in a climate of discussion, safety and support. For those whose lives repeat the past they are trapped in a cycle of events that cannot be broken. Their stories are not told but lived.
